I had the privilege of attending the one-day conference \u201cBEYOND 1926: Centennial of the Scholarly Pursuits in Swat,\u201d<\/strong> held on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at the Department of Archaeology, Government Postgraduate Jahanzeb College, Swat. For a student of archaeology with a particular interest in historiography, the event was not merely an academic gathering; it was an opportunity to reflect on a century of scholarship, research, interpretation, and intellectual engagement with the history and cultural heritage of the Swat Valley.<\/p>\n

The conference marked an important milestone: one hundred years of systematic scholarly exploration of Swat<\/strong>. Over the past century, the valley has attracted historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, researchers, and other scholars whose work has contributed significantly to our understanding of its rich and complex past. Bringing together scholars, researchers, teachers, experts, and students from diverse academic backgrounds, the conference provided an inspiring platform for dialogue and intellectual exchange.<\/p>\n

Five scholarly presentations were delivered by Dr. Sultan-i-Rome, Dr. Rafiullah Khan, Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad, Dr. Sarfaraz Khan, and Dr. Irfanullah Khan<\/strong>. Their presentations offered valuable perspectives on the historiography, archaeology, intellectual traditions, and evolving understanding of Swat. More importantly, the discussions moved beyond simply celebrating the achievements of the past century. They encouraged participants to critically examine existing scholarship, identify gaps in knowledge, consider the challenges confronting archaeological and historical research, and explore new directions for future academic inquiry.<\/p>\n

One of the most important messages emerging from the conference was that scholarship is not a finished project. The past may belong to previous generations, but its interpretation remains an ongoing intellectual responsibility. Every generation has the opportunity\u2014and indeed the responsibility\u2014to revisit established narratives, question inherited assumptions, examine neglected evidence, and bring new perspectives to the study of history and heritage.<\/p>\n

This is particularly relevant in the context of Swat. The valley possesses an extraordinary archaeological and cultural legacy, but understanding that legacy requires more than the preservation of monuments and artifacts. It requires sustained research, critical historiography, interdisciplinary collaboration, and greater engagement with local knowledge and perspectives. The future of scholarship in Swat therefore depends not only on institutions and established researchers but also on the younger generation of scholars who will inherit this intellectual tradition.<\/p>\n

For me personally, the conference was especially meaningful because I had long wished to meet Dr. Sultan-i-Rome<\/strong>, whose scholarship I deeply respect. Having the opportunity to meet him in person was one of the memorable moments of the event. At the same time, being surrounded by distinguished scholars, researchers, teachers, and fellow students created an environment in which learning extended well beyond the formal presentations.<\/p>\n

Sit in the company of good and capable people, for their influence will leave a positive impression on you.<\/em><\/p>\n

The saying aptly describes my experience at the conference. Academic gatherings are valuable not only because of the papers presented but also because of the conversations they generate, the questions they inspire, and the people one encounters along the way. Sometimes, a brief conversation with a scholar can open a new way of thinking; a single question can encourage deeper research; and listening to different perspectives can challenge assumptions that we may have taken for granted.<\/p>\n

The conference also reminded me that the study of Swat’s past should not remain confined to the examination of what has already been discovered. There is a need to ask what remains unexplored, whose perspectives remain underrepresented, which interpretations require reconsideration, and what new methodologies can contribute to our understanding of the valley’s history<\/strong>. These questions are essential if the next century of scholarship is to be as intellectually meaningful as the century that preceded it.<\/p>\n

The title \u201cBEYOND 1926\u201d<\/strong> was therefore particularly significant. It invites us not only to look back at a hundred years of scholarly pursuits but also to look forward. The real value of commemorating a century of research lies in using that experience as a foundation for the future. The next chapter should encourage more rigorous research, stronger academic institutions, greater opportunities for young researchers, and closer collaboration between scholars and local communities.<\/p>\n

I left the conference with a renewed appreciation for the importance of scholarship, dialogue, and intellectual curiosity. More importantly, I came away with the realization that studying history is not simply about understanding what happened in the past; it is about developing the intellectual courage to ask new questions about that past and understanding how those questions shape our present and future.<\/p>\n

I am sincerely grateful to the organizers for arranging such a meaningful and intellectually enriching gathering. I am particularly thankful to my supervisor, Dr. Rafiullah Khan<\/strong>, for inviting me and giving me the opportunity to be part of this memorable academic event.<\/p>\n
