MINGORA:  Young scouts here on Monday formally kicked off the spring tree plantation by planting the first tree  of the season.

The tree plantation campaign was started on the International Day of Scout, by members of the Swat Scouts Open Group involving elected representatives and government officials.

The scouts also formed a group of 60 scouts that will take part in the plantation campaign across the valley.

“As usual, we will plant thousands of trees in the different areas of Swat taking the valley on the track of green Pukhtunkhwa. Scouting means service to the community and tree plantation is the best service in the present day,” said Akhtar Ali, group leader of the Swat Scouts Open Group.

Member Provincial Assembly and DDAC Chairman Fazal Hakeem who planted a tree to inaugurate the campaign urged every citizen to take part in the tree plantation drive.

“Tree plantation is the responsibility of every citizen as we are faced with severe menace of climate change the major cause behind which is cutting large number of trees,” he said, adding that the spring tree plantation would help protect environment in Swat.

He said that green Swat would promote tourism.

Later, DIG Malakand Azad Khan, DC Swat Atif ur Rehman, AC Swat Abdul Nasir Khan and District Education Officer Dr Hafiz Ibrahim took part in the plantation campaign by planting trees in their offices.
