MINGORA: Culture and civil society activists on Tuesday lauded KP chief minister’s assurance of keeping Jahanzeb College’s historical and cultural value intact.

The recent earthquake caused cracks in the college’s building and was vacated by college administration after it was declared dangerous. The college was constructed by former Swat state’s ruler Miangul Abdul Haq Jahanzeb in 1952.

Chief Minister Pervez Khattak had directed the earthquake engineering centre of the Engineering University Peshawar to conduct a survey of the building. “We understand the sentiments of people of Swat and will maintain the cultural and historical value of the college,” he had assured a delegation from Swat.

Cultural activists said the chief minister by announcing preservation of the college had won hearts and minds of the people of Swat.

“No one can deny the cultural and historical value of Jahanzeb College as it was constructed at a time when there was no educational institute in the entire region. The college is a symbol of peace and civilisation,” said Usman Ulasyar, chairman of Suvastu Arts and Culture Association.
