SHANGLA: Father of a teenage girl, who was allegedly killed by her husband, has appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan and the prime minister to order police to register FIR in the case.

He was speaking to reporters in Saidu Sharif here on Friday. According to them, their daughter, Shazma, 16, who was married to her cousin, Amjad Khan, in Koz Pow area of Puran tehsil, was found dead after six months of her marriage.

Karim Jan, father of the slain woman, said she lived a miserable life after the marriage as her husband used to quarrel and beat her. “She was subjected to physical and mental violence by her husband. Then one day, a doctor called me to visit the hospital immediately and when I reached there my daughter was lying dead,” he said, adding she was poisoned to death by her husband.

Karim Jan said when he went to the nearby Chowga police station the personnel not only refused to register FIR against the culprit, but they also expressed unwillingness to visit the crime scene. “When I insisted and asked the SHO to file the FIR, he went out of control and threatened me with dire consequences. I even informed local MPA Abdul Munim but he also did nothing,” he said.

The aggrieved man said the police also refused to give him copy of the postmortem report of his daughter’s body. He said he knocked at every door for seeking justice but neither police nor the elected representatives listened to him.

Tabassum Adnan, a woman rights activist who was following the case said that she received information of several cases in which girls were killed by in-laws but showed it as suicidal attempts.

“There are hundreds of death cases of girls which are shown as suicide attempts but in fact they are honor killings. Unfortunately, police and government institutions are so weak and corrupt that these cases are being buried without investigation,” she said.

She showed concern over police refusal to register FIR in the fresh case and warned of going out to streets in protest against police and the weak implementation of law regarding women rights. “Why does police refuse to register FIR in the case?” she questioned.

When contacted, Usman Munir, the SHO of Chowga police station, said that he had filed the report in daily diary of the police station, a copy of which was sent to the public prosecutor for further suggestion.

“We have conducted an investigation and will take legal action against the culprit,” he said.
